Creating Timeless Pieces Of Art
By BOBBIE GREEN
The Progress
For the past nine years Mesquite resident Terry Cloud has been collecting broken watches and turning them into unique "Watch Art." He creates beautiful plaques made from parts and pieces of old watches and clocks.
Cloud, a retired electrical contractor, explained that when he moved to Mesquite nine years ago, his wife had a box of broken watches she was going to give to the thrift store. He took them instead and began to experiment with how he could recycle them. It opened the door to a whole world of new creation.
It takes devotion and patience to work with the such small parts. But it is something that Cloud enjoys and it keeps him busy."I can't imagine waking up every day in retirement with nothing to do," Cloud said. "Everyone should have a hobby."
While living in Las Vegas Cloud and his wife volunteered at the Cleveland Clinic. Cloud has since made a watch art of a brain picture that hangs on the wall at the clinic. He then made an amazing watch art depicting the outside of the unique building. The Clinic is going to auction it off to raise money for its operations.
Cloud recently presented Mayor Litman with a "Watch Art" plaque."I love to create the art work, then give them to my friends," Cloud said. "Some of the pieces have stories with them. One depicts a lighthouse with the ocean and the creatures in the ocean."
Cloud's workshop is in the basement of his house and he calls it "tinker town." It is almost unimaginable, so immaculately clean, and orderly. Thousands of watch parts are separated and arranged in a very accessible and useable fashion.
To assist him with the small parts, his eye care doctor provided him with an optometrist's head set with a high-powered light and different interchangeable strength lenses.
Cloud said that if anyone has broken watches or unwanted picture frames, he would gladly take them to be cleaned and recycled into "Watch Art." For more information contact him at [email protected].
